Retouching Your Original Lettering
May 23, 24, 25, 26*
11am–1pm CDT

In this class, we will learn tips for retouching your hand lettering to achieve a cleaner look on your original work.


During the first three days of class, I will share how to clean up rough strokes; adding thickness to specific areas; and how to clean up mistakes or places you want to re-do. 


*On the fourth day, we will analyze student work (sent prior to class) for tips on how and where to do retouching.


PLEASE NOTE: This class will NOT use Photoshop or Elements for digital retouching. We will focus strictly on retouching original pieces.

NEW EXTENDED CLASSES IN APRIL, JULY AND SEPTEMBER

These three EXTENDED classes are six weeks, 2.5 hours each week. There will be homework each week, and students will have the opportunity to schedule private Zoom sessions with the instructor to review their work and ask questions. Videos are available with no time limit.

Alphabet Book
Six Fridays:
Apr. 29, May 6, 13, 20, 27, June 3

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate to Advanced

Students should have some basic knowledge of a few calligraphic hands.

We will learn how to create a cohesive alphabet, using both traditional and unusual tools. For their book, students can decide whether to do a cohesive alphabet or an alphabet with a different style for each letter.

Our final assignment will be to assemble our alphabets into a simple accordion-fold book. No gluing or sewing involved.

Adobe Elements for Calligraphers
Six Fridays:
July 8, 15, 22, 29, Aug. 5, 12

NOTE: Student must have access to Elements and have basic knowledge of the software. Students will also need to know how to share their screen on Zoom. Please email me if you have questions.

Working through a series of exercises and projects, students will learn how to scan and touch up lettering; how to add color; how to work in layers; and how to prepare art for reproduction.

 

You will have homework assignments each week, and the opportunity for one-on-one instructor review between classes.

If you are a person who loves the personal touch of a beautifully written note on fine paper, then this class is for you!

We will learn the Italic Cursive hand and explore ways to embellish it using flourishes and large, swash capitals.

We will also write sample letters and learn tips on how to address envelopes. Suggestions for paper, fine pens and other embellishments will be given.

Expressive Cursive Handwriting

Join me for this fun class using different techniques to decorate tumbled marble unglazed tiles. These 4" x 4" tiles can be used as coasters, incorporated into backsplashes, or as just stand-alone art pieces.

We will do some lettering, stamping and learn a simple transfer technique. Colored pencils and markers may also be used to add color.

Fun & Funky Letters

This is a great class for those who want to learn how to create playful letters, both in color and black and white. Through a series of exercises we will explore new ways to make letters with both traditional and non-traditional tools. We will work with black on white, white on black, walnut ink, watercolors, metallics, and gel pens on different papers.

Make Your Mark

This class will explore the beauty of the abstract form, using all sorts of tools and fluids to ‘make our mark’ on the page. The artist Georgia O’Keeffe said: ‘Go fill your space in a beautiful way.’ It is my hope that this class will help you do that!

This is a 6-hour Zoom class, 2 hours each day for three days. Video is available with no time limit.

Wild Writing with Resist

This class will explore ways of making letters and abstract marks using all sorts of traditional and non-traditional writing tools. Students will be led through exercises that will focus on composition and the importance of negative space. They will then learn several resist techniques using liquid gesso, acrylics, Frisket, and masking fluid.

Akim Variations & Long Compositions

‘Akim Cursive’ is a hand created by calligrapher Hans-Joachim Burgert and is said to replicate the rhythm of the human heart. This class briefly explores Burgert’s version, then moves into more expressive variations using several different tools. We will also write longer texts and compositions, focusing on the rhythmic patterns for which Akim is known. Finally, we will look closely at Burgert’s abstract compositions and create larger pieces which mimic his style.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a one-day class is being offered through Legacies III, the International Calligraphy Conference that was held in July, 2021. This class will be offered through June, 2023.
